Who we ask first, race by race, and why. Two questions decide the order: is this person a door opener, someone who can get us into a campaign, a room or an interview, and does the ask spoil if it is made too early. Everything below is computed from the board and moves as the board moves.
Door openers first, then three waves in sequence. A later wave never goes out before the one ahead of it has landed.
1Door openers first: the people we already know, by phone. A door opener is a person one of us knows well enough to call, who can get us into a campaign, a room or an interview. Daniel, Matt and Nathan make those calls first. Marked on the board as a door opener; any role; never a cold email. From 9 September, the Wednesday after Labor Day.
2Wave one, access: candidates, campaign managers, consultants. The people who decide whether we get in the room, asked once per race, through a door opener wherever we have one. Cold emails go out Monday 21 September, after the door-opener calls.
3Validators as replies land: press, pollsters, party, money. They explain and corroborate; they are easy to reach and hard to spoil, so they follow the access ask.
4National insight last: trilogy alumni and the big names. Held until we know which rooms we are in. The one exception: an alumnus who is working a tracked race is a warm relationship, and goes in wave one.
